Small Business Website Design: How We Build Sites That Rank

A good-looking website isn't enough if nobody can find it. Here's how we approach design, development and hosting so your site works and ranks.

Most small business websites look fine. The problem is that nobody finds them. Good small business website design isn't only about colours and fonts. It's about building a site that loads quickly, works on every phone, and gives search engines everything they need to send you customers. This post explains what we do at FormedEasy, and why we do it the way we do.

Why a good looking website isn't enough

A website has one job: to turn people who are looking for what you offer into enquiries, bookings or sales. For that to happen, three things need to be true:

  1. People can find it. It shows up when someone searches for your service in your area.
  2. It works for them. It loads quickly, reads well on a phone and makes the next step obvious.
  3. They trust it. It looks professional, it's secure, and the information is clear and up to date.

Plenty of sites get the third one right and miss the first two. A beautiful homepage can't help you if Google can't read it properly, or if visitors give up waiting for it to load.

What good small business website design looks like

It starts with your customers, not the layout

Before we design anything, we look at what your customers actually search for and what they need to see before they get in touch. That shapes everything: which pages the site needs, what each page is called and what goes on it. A plumber's site and a wedding photographer's site need very different things, even if both "just need a website".

It's built for phones first

Most people will see your site on a phone, often in a hurry. So we design for small screens first: readable text, buttons that are easy to tap, and contact details one tap away. Then we make sure it looks just as good on a desktop.

Every page has a clear next step

Each page should answer a question and then tell the visitor what to do next, whether that's calling you, booking a slot or asking for a quote. If a page doesn't lead anywhere, we either give it a purpose or remove it.

Technical SEO from day one, not as an afterthought

This is where we're different. Most websites are launched first and "optimised for SEO" later. Usually that means fixing problems that should never have been there.

FormedEasy started as a technical SEO audit tool, so before any website we build goes live, we run every page through the same checks our audit runs. That includes:

  • Page titles and meta descriptions: unique, the right length and describing the page.
  • Headings: one clear main heading per page and a logical structure underneath.
  • Images: compressed so they load quickly, with alt text and dimensions set.
  • Canonical tags and redirects: so search engines know which address is the real one, and old pages point to their new homes.
  • Security: HTTPS everywhere, plus the security headers browsers expect.
  • Sitemap and robots.txt: so search engines can find every page you want indexed.

You launch with a clean report instead of a to-do list. If you'd like to see where your current site stands, you can run a free SEO audit in a couple of minutes.

Google's own SEO starter guide covers many of the same basics. We just make sure they're all done before launch day.

Speed matters more than most people think

A slow website costs you twice: visitors leave before it loads, and search engines take page experience into account. Google measures this with Core Web Vitals: how quickly the main content appears, how fast the page responds to a tap, and whether things jump around while it loads.

We build sites that send ready-to-read pages straight from the server, keep images light and avoid loading code a page doesn't need. The result is a site that feels instant on a phone, not just on a fast office connection.

Redesigning? Don't lose the rankings you've earned

If you already have a website, it has probably built up some value in search results over the years, even if you don't love how it looks. A redesign that changes page addresses without redirects can throw that away overnight.

Before a redesign, we crawl your existing site, find the pages that already bring in visitors, and map every old address to its new one. Search engines, bookmarks and links from other sites all follow you to the new version.

Hosting and care, handled for you

A website isn't finished when it goes live. It needs hosting, security updates, backups and the occasional change. Our hosting and care plans cover:

  • SSL certificates and security headers
  • regular backups and uptime monitoring
  • updates to keep everything secure
  • small content changes when you need them

If you'd rather host it yourself, that's fine too. We hand everything over.

How a project with us works

  1. Discover: a call about your business, your customers and what the site needs to do. If you have a site already, we audit it.
  2. Design: page plans and designs for you to review, shaped around what your customers search for.
  3. Build: we build the site, add your content, set up redirects and test it on phones, tablets and desktops.
  4. Launch and look after: we go live with a clean SEO audit, then keep the site hosted, backed up and up to date.

Most small business sites take around four to eight weeks from the first call to launch, depending on size and how quickly content comes together.
